PERSONALITY: Asato is, in many ways, confusingly simple.

One side of his personality is a strong, silent front he puts up to try and gain the respect of other members of his tribe--the Kira tribe. Kira is perceived by other Ribika to be a village of warriors, surrounded by myths and rumors of murder, xenophobia, and even cannibalism. To adhere to this image, Asato's demeanor is stern and emotionless when acting out the will of his village and its chieftain. He will follow orders without question and execute them without mercy. He seems to feel remarkably little when taking the life of an enemy, least of all remorse or even ill will. He simply considers it something that has to be done, and it may imply he doesn't entirely understand the gravity behind the concept of death.

In battle, he can be downright frightening—his father’s lineage, coming from a tribe of devil-worshipers, granted him monstrous blood, and he was literally born as a small monster, changing into a Ribika as he grew up. While this is usually not an issue, it can take a serious toll on him when his emotions flare up, leading him to attack indiscriminately and with excessive force and violence. He seems to be cold and antisocial, but really he just has trouble interacting with people. His usual demeanor is reserved and even shy, and he can take a great deal of abuse himself, but when a person he cares for is threatened he will lash out, often with the intent to kill.

He's a stickler for rules and tradition, just like any Kira cat. It takes twenty years of living in Kira and one very extraordinary newcomer to make him question what he's always been told, and even then he's so torn between what he wants and what his tribe asks of him that he's driven nearly to tears. Asato feels a sense of pride for the practices and customs he's been taught since he was a child. Some of the things he's learned, however, defy Ribikan social standards. For instance, an unspoken rule says not to corner an opponent more than necessary--but in Kira, the rule is that a cornered opponent must be pursued and killed no matter what. Asato's simple acceptance of these teachings tends to shock Ribika from other tribes.

His life in Kira has led him to be very frugal with his trust. He assumes that people will hate him, and expects nothing more from them. It also gave him a sense of self-deprecation that is hard to remedy: anything bad that happens, he will assume is his fault, and he will rarely attribute success to anything even close to his own merits. Asato grew up being told that he was a monster and a demon, so that is what he grew to believe. The situation is not helped in the slightest by the fact that his ears and tail are black—a sign of dark magic and bad omens in Ribikan lore. He is simply not used to receiving kindness from anyone, and when it does happen it can leave him extremely flustered or even deeply upset. Conversely, he is hesitant to reach out and be kind to anyone, fearing that he may hurt them.

However, Asato does have a gentle side when he isn’t trying to be the iconic Kiran warrior cat. In private, he's soft-spoken and rather reserved. His behavior is almost childlike in its enthusiasm, and towards commonplace things he can be rather naïve. If he perceives someone’s kindness as genuine, he'll enthusiastically respond in turn, possibly clinging to the faint hope that someone thinks of him as more than a mindless animal. He will readily and repeatedly compliment them, eager to learn more about them and maybe even form a friendship. If he does form a relationship like this, he also constantly seeks to prove himself to this person, much the same way he always seeks to prove himself to Kira. In this case, too, he will do whatever it takes to earn said approval. Friends have little to fear around Asato, since his behavior is basically completely docile. In some cases his opinion towards his friends is an adoration that borders on reverence.

The sharp contrast between the "Kiran" Asato and the "private" Asato has thrown off at least one outsider, and there'd probably be more, if Kira were welcoming to outsiders.

His attributed emotion, shown by the curse mark that would later in canon be placed on him, is grief. However, Asato doesn't seem to be the type to hold grudges for a long time, and when he does it's usually for things that seem insignificant (like being called a lizard by one of his reluctant companions), rather than for the abuse he sustained in Kira. The biggest exception to this is the sense of deep resentment he feels towards his father, a Meigi cat named Kaltz. Never having been told exactly what happened prior to his birth, he always assumed that Kaltz had simply abandoned him and his mother. By the time he was old enough to learn the truth, Kaya had already passed on, and the Kirans felt such a hatred for the Meigi tribe that Kaltz's existence was never discussed.

\Everything that's happened to him is accepted under the guise of fairness, interpreted as something he has deserved by mere merit of being born or existing. However, when he becomes close to someone his grief may become more evident. He tends to be torn between wanting to be close--Asato is an affectionate person, to be sure--and being afraid to become too involved, lest the other party be hurt. All in all, he has love and compassion to spare. The difficult part is getting him to feel that he is worthy of expressing it.

Because Kira is an isolationist village and Asato had limited contact even with his own tribemates, his social knowledge is dismal. He makes blunt statements regardless of whether or not they are appropriate, and seems to have little to no notion of personal space or social propriety and etiquette. The concept of money, though it exists in his world, is entirely foreign to him--if he sees something he likes, he just takes it and walks away. He's also aware of when he messes something up or at least understands when someone intervenes, and he's easily discouraged as a result. People tend to believe he is unintelligent, but that's not entirely true. He can be practical in many ways, even knowing how to sew, and sometimes has moments of astonishing perceptiveness, perhaps because of his simple, almost childlike view of the world.

He has some trouble with crowds and tends to avoid them by whatever means necessary, even if it means clambering up houses to walk along the rooftops and entering rooms through the window. It is implied he is at least conscious enough to understand the superstition regarding black fur, since he more often than not will cover his ears and tail with a large hooded cloak when heading out into public.

In fact, Asato has a general discomfort or even outright fear of the outside world. To him, Kira is the world, and to go beyond its borders is downright terrifying to him. To be spurned by Kira is therefore perhaps the one thing he truly fears—if he were to be forced to leave, he feels he simply would not survive. The outside world is a vast and scary place, and not one that will readily accept him. This makes the threat of banishment one of the most sure-fire ways to get Asato to obey any command. It takes a long discussion to convince him to flee from Kira, and once he does, he finds that the rest of Sisa is far larger and more beautiful than he imagined. It doesn't automatically get rid of his fears, but he's not entirely opposed to exploring, and he seems to find joy and fulfillment in learning even simple things about how the world works.

ABILITIES: Asato is a Touga, a Ribika who excels in fighting, and his weapon of choice is a two-handed broadsword. He favors power over speed and can therefore be tripped up by more agile opponents, but when his blows connect, they connect hard.

The demonic blood in his veins manifests itself most noticeably when fighting, as he may, rarely, slip into a state of heightened, almost mindless aggression, causing him to attack friend and foe alike. When exposed to very strong magic, the change may also be physical, causing him to shapeshift into a large, demonic creature. When this happens, "Asato" is gone, and the creature acts only on the instinct to kill and feed. However, the change is something that would be extremely rare and only happen under very particular conditions; Asato would have to practically be force-fed an incredible dose of energy for anything like this to happen.

Kira cats are adept at hiding their presence in the dark, making them very adept at stalking enemies or prey. It's drilled into Asato to such a great extent that he'll stifle his energy whenever he's in the dark; this means he sometimes sneaks up on people and startles them without meaning to.

Asato also has sharp claws and fangs which he can use as weapons. His senses are sharper than a human's, particularly smell, sight, and hearing, and he's got excellent night vision.

POSSESSIONS: The clothes on his back, his sword, and a small petal from a never-wilting flower, which serves as a memento of his mother.

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE: Something was wrong with the cats of Kira that night.

It must have been past midnight when Asato was alerted to the gathering crowd outside, the rumbles of discontent and the murmurs of spy, of outsider, growing from rumors passed from one cat to another into bloodlust and rage. It wasn't normal, not considering the welcome the chieftain had given the newcomer just a few hours before--dry and not entirely pleased with the intrusion, but not violent. This was just a passer-by. Someone had stumbled in by accident and in the morning they would be sent on their way.

Asato would have liked that.

The bowl he'd used to serve his unexpected guest some food now stood empty on the table. He'd been so very hungry. It must have been a long journey. How far would someone have to travel, and what would they have to experience, that they could be so hungry that even a bowl of nuts and berries was enough to bring tears to his eyes and drive all semblance of understandable speech away from his lips?

It must be an impossibly large world out there. He thought of this and shuddered--and wondered.

Once the uproar began he was quick to wake Konoe, giving him a warning underneath his breath and urging him to escape under the cover of darkness and fog, or they'd surely kill him. This was unthinkable.

Nothing escaped from the senses of a Kira cat. Used to hiding in the shadows, they had no trouble finding the stumbling newcomer. Asato wondered if he was even trying to mask his energy. He could sense it too; it exploded outward from his body, unseen but certainly not un-felt, and the more the Kirans closed around them, the stronger it became, until the aura of wrath in the air was overcome by an astounding feeling of empathy, and of grief.

"I want to play with them," he'd said as a kitten, clutching to the hem of his mother's cloak. She'd knelt and brushed a hand through his hair, over velvety little ears, down along the beginnings of tusks growing from the corners of his jaws. With his mother, he was safe. But he saw the other kittens roughhousing together and knew he couldn't join, and not even Kaya could soothe the hurt he felt when he watched from the safety of her arms.

While he was still too young to understand, the village became discontent. The whispered rumors were quickly followed by shouted accusations--demon, devil-spawn. Asato was just a child then, but the message they sent him was clear: you are a threat, and we want you gone.

Now, he looked to Konoe at his side while chief gave his verdict--a Meigi spy, to be punished with death. He could feel the eyes on him too, a hatred directed at the both of them, a spy and a traitor. Asato could tolerate it, but he couldn't tolerate anyone speaking that way of Konoe. After years of hearing only the word monster, he'd now heard the word beautiful. That was something he would fight for, not for his own sake but for the sake of someone so impossibly kind.

When he threw himself upon his own tribemates, his cry echoed as an earth-shaking roar.
